Saving Water

Residential properties are responsible for around 78 per cent of water consumption on the Central Coast, so it's important to be water smart in and around your home. Saving water today helps to secure our local water supply for the future.

Inside Choosing washing machine

Large amounts of water are used in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry inside our homes every day.

You can reduce the water you use by:

  • Installing a water efficient showerhead, and taking shorter showers
  • Installing a dual flush toilet, and using half flush
  • Installing aerators or flow regulators on all your taps
  • Installing a water efficient washing machine
  • Connecting your rainwater tank internally so rainwater can be used to flush your toilet and wash your clothes
  • Using a bucket to collect greywater in your shower or bathtub
  • Check for leaks on taps, pipes and other fittings.

The Australian Government's Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme can help you save water inside by showing the water consumption and water efficiency of each product. Choosing a product that saves water and money is easy - the more stars a product has, the more water efficient it is.

Live water smart outdoors and keep your water use to a minimum by:

  • Installing a rainwater tank and using rainwater to water gardens, top up pools, and wash cars and boats
  • Using native, drought tolerant plants in your garden
  • Putting mulch on your garden beds to prevent water loss
  • Using greywater collected from your shower or bathtub on your garden
  • Only watering your garden on allocated days
  • Washing your car or boat on the lawn with a bucket
  • Cleaning footpaths, driveways and verandas with a broom
  • Check for leaks on taps, pipes and other fittings
  • Using a pool cover to reduce water evaporation.
