Gosford City and Wyong Shire councils have extended their washing machine rebate program for an additional six months.
The rebate program currently allows residents whose house is connected to the town supply to apply for a rebate of $200 on the purchase of a new water-efficient washing machine.
Gosford Mayor, Jim Macfadyen, said the rebate program was an important way to encourage Central Coast residents to make water efficient choices when looking to purchase a new washing machine.
“Central Coast residents have made major changes to the way they use water and the community is now one of the most water efficient in the state” he said.
“We want to continue to encourage everyone to be water efficient, which includes rewarding residents who chose appliances that will help to keep water usage low in the long term.
“The Councils have therefore decided to extend the offer of a $200 rebate on washing machines rated four water-efficiency stars or over until the 31 December 2008.
“In the meantime the Councils will review the program to ensure it remains the most effective way to help the community”
Wyong Mayor, Warren Welham, said the purchase of a water efficient washing machine was a great way to save water in the home.
“On average around 27 per cent of household water is used in the laundry, with some older style washing machines using as much as 176 litres of water per wash” he said.
“Households that make the switch to a more water efficient washing machine, which use as little as 49 litres per wash, can save up to 21,000 litres of town water per year.
“Since the rebate program was introduced over 9,500 rebates worth $1.9 million have been paid to residents of the Central Coast.
“In the past nine months alone each Council has processed, on average, 230 rebates a month. That’s 460 households a month committing to become more water efficient.”
More information on the rebate, including Terms and Conditions, is available at all Council Libraries and Customer Service Centres or visit Gosford/Wyong Councils' Water Authority web site.
