Central Coast Water Festival 2007 |
updated: 20/09/07 |
Thousands of visitors flocked to the 2007 Central Coast Water Festival on Sunday 28 October at The Entrance.
The festival was held by Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils to mark the end of National Water Week. Organisers estimate about 8,500 people turned out to enjoy the day.
The festival was an opportunity to learn more about water saving practices while also having fun with the family.
Talented singer Ben McKenzie was a major drawcard to the event, as were the many community displays and diverse range of information available about water use habits and water conservation.
The Gosford/Wyong Councils’ Water Authority information marquee was particularly busy with Central Coast residents keen to find out more about Council activities and initiatives.
Of particularly interest was information about WaterPlan 2050 and the progress being made on the Mardi-Mangrove Link project. People were also keen to obtain the latest information about rainwater tank rebates, washing machine rebates and greywater treatment system rebates offered by the Councils.
The Central Coast Water Festival has grown each year for the past few years. Crowd numbers have continued to increase as the range of information on offer is targeted to local needs and interests.
School Speaking Competition
Young Central Coast students impressed the festival crowds with their informed views on the importance of saving water.
They competed in the finals of the school’s Public Speaking Competition with some excellent speeches about the value of water. The Gosford City area winner was Dallas Youles from Avoca Beach Public School, while the Wyong Shire winner was Mikayla Cranswick from Mannering Park Public School.
Runners-up were Laura-Rose Carbone from Point Clare Public School and Timbre Olson from Mannering Park Public School.
School Art Competitions
Also on display at the Water Festival were the high quality entries in the local student Poster Competition which had the importance of water as its theme.
The Gosford City area winner was Sara D from Wamberal Public School, and the Wyong Shire winner was Sarah from Wyong Grove Public School.
The Street Art competition was of an equal high standard with entrants asked to show what could be done to alleviate the current water situation on the Central Coast.
The 12-17 year section was won by Sharni Sbrugnera with Ben Walden runner-up, and the 18-24 section was won by Kyle Herder, with Kim Bargache runner-up.
Support for Local Charities
Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils were proud to support the fundraising efforts of Central Coast Community Chest during the 2007 Water Festival.
The Councils donated two 3,000litre rainwater tanks to Community Chest and had them wrapped in a giant canvas. Visitors were invited paint their personal water saving message on the canvas in return for a gold coin donation.
People could then buy raffle tickets in a bid to win the tanks, as a further fundraising effort.
Central Coast Community Chest supports more than 85 local charities. The canvas will be on display at a number of local events in December 2007
The Central Coast Water Festival was presented by Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils, with the support of Community First Credit Union, Central Coast Radio, Central Coast Express Advocate, NBN Television, Freedom Pools, One Stop Tank Shop and Harvey Norman.
