Whizzy's Water Tips

updated: 20/09/07

The winners have been announced for the month of February 2007. Congratulations to our winners who each won a bottle of waterless carwash.

The Gosford City Council winner was Mr. Barry Mackay of Umina. Mr. Mackay installed a small stopcock in the shower between the wall and the shower head and arm which enables him to set the water temperature at the beginning of the shower, turn the small tap off, soap up then when the small tap is turned back on there is no loss of water while having to readjust the temperature again.

The Wyong Shire Council winner was Mr. Richard Clough of Gorokan. Mr Clough collects the water that drips form his air conditioner into large buckets. This water is then used on his garden to keep his plants alive. On hot days, Mr. Clough can collect up to five buckets of fresh clean water.

Central Coast residents are helping Whizzy out with his water saving. See below for all the tips he has received so far.

Do you have a tip that could help Whizzy use less than 150 litres of town water a day? Enter it here for your chance to win.

Outside

Put out buckets around your house to catch the water when it rains then throw it on the garden or wash the dog or even wash the car.

(Brenton Eslick, Chain Valley Bay )

Don't use your greywater on vegie gardens or fruit trees (ie. something you will eat) – use it on your garden instead

(Natalie Burns, Bateau Bay )

Make Water while you Keep Cool! If you have a split-system air conditioner, a bucket placed under the outlet pipe will collect litres of clean fresh water for use on your garden.

(Gerard Goodwin-Moore, Woy Woy)

When using air conditioning unit place bucket under water outlet pipe to catch condensation to use for watering pot plants or rinsing down other out door surfaces.

(Ms Julia de Montfort, Chittaway)

We rent our house so can't install a rainwater tank. Instead we have four 200lt drums with flyscreen netting that collects roof water and we can wash our cars and water our chooks.

(Mrs Colleen Radford)

Collect the water from your air conditioner - on hot days you can collect up to 5 buckets of clean, fresh water. The plants will love it!

(Mr Richard Clough, Gorokan)

To water plants we put all our buckets out when it rains to collect a little water for the garden after the rain passes.

(Mr Geoff Morrison, Avoca Beach)

Kitchen

Keep cold drinking water in the fridge so you don't have to have the tap running until the water gets cold.

(Anna Forsby, Gosford)

Scrape and wipe with a dish rag - don't 'rinse' your dishes before putting into the dishwasher.

(Kimberly Bushnell, Umina)

Save water and reduce your electricity usage and help charities. Take advantage of the NSW State Government greenhouse gas abatement scheme. You'll get an AAA-rated showerhead to help save water and 6 low-energy light globes. Some companies provide this for FREE.

They may also donate money to charity for each subscription.

(Gerard Goodwin-Moore, Woy Woy)

Scrape food from dinner plates into the bin rather than rinsing under running water. Wipe fats and oils off with a paper towel after it has hardened and dispose of into the bin. Not only does this save water, but it also minimises the effects of harmful fats and oils on the house sewer system and Council’s infrastructure.

(Mr David Kingsley, Berkeley Vale)

Wash fruit and vegetables in a small basin of water (not under a running tap) and use this water on your garden.

(Mrs Anna Forsbey)

Bathroom

In the shower - turn the water on to get wet. Turn the tap off to lather up (and shampoo your hair) and then turn back on to rinse off.

(Anna Forsby, Gosford)

Shave before getting into the shower. If you must shave in the shower turn the water off whilst doing so.

(Kimberly Bushnell, Umina)

Brush your teeth over the sink rather than in the shower and of course, turn the tap off while doing so.

(Kimberly Bushnell, Umina)

When my son and I are in the shower we put our 4 minute timer on and try to beat it (and we win all the time!)

(Natalie Burns, Bateau Bay)

Before shower head & arm, fit a small tap [toilet stopcock available from Bunnings $4.80 usually fits perfect] This allows you to set water temp with H & C taps, then soap yourself up with the small tap turned off, when turned back on there is no loss of water waiting to get correct water temp, saves lots of water getting correct temp back again.

(Mr Barry Mackay)

"If it's Yellow - let it mellow, if it's Brown - flush it down". By not flushing after every use of the toilet, each person could save at least 30 litres of water every day.

(Mr Barry Wrightson)

When washing hair, use a shampoo/conditioner rather than separate shampoo and conditioner. This uses less water as single rinse only required.

(Mrs Helen Dawson)

We do not empty the bath after use and we use the water to flush the toilet via buckets.

(Mr Geoff Morrison, Avoca Beach)

'When it's yellow let it mellow, when it’s brown, flush it down.

(Ms Kristina Trafford-Jones, Greenpoint)

When we have a shower we wet all over our body in the shower, then turn the taps off, then shampoo hair and wash body with soap while the taps are off. Once done we then turn the taps back on and wash.

(Mr Grant May, Gorokan)
