Water Education in Primary Schools

updated: 20/09/07

What is the Central Coast Watertight Program?

The Central Coast Watertight Program is a joint water education program coordinated by Gosford and Wyong Councils, and Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre.

Watertight is an interactive water conservation resource tailored to the different stages of the Primary school curriculum. The program is like a one-day mini excursion held in the grounds of the school designed to raise awareness of water conservation and water management issues amongst the school community.

All students from K-6 participate in a series of activities focusing on the water cycle and water supply, water use, wastewater and the schools management of water. Many of the activities are hands on and are linked to the Key Learning Areas of the NSW curriculum and also outcomes of the DET’s Environment Policy.

Example activities include water quality testing, creating artwork, problem solving, report writing, communicating messages and studying models and maps. This program also compliments your schools involvement in council’s School Environmental Awareness Program.

What are the benefits of participating in the Watertight program?

  1. Students will have a greater understating of our local water supply and the importance of water in our community.
  2. Students will achieve syllabus outcomes through activities that have relevance to their daily lives.
  3. Development of a Water Management Plan for your school which students will have involvement in and ownership of.
  4. The messages about the importance of water in our daily lives will filter into the broader community.

Who gets to be involved in the Watertight program?

All schools on the Central Coast will have the chance to take part in the Watertight program as it is rolled out to Central Coast Primary schools over the next two years. Schools with the highest water use that meet the certain criteria will take first priority.
